Pittsburgh-based geotechnical specialty contractor Nicholson Construction recently joined the Bellwood Dam Modification Project.
The dam, which is located in Tyrone, PA, is undergoing more than $30 million worth of upgrades, which include the construction of a new spillway, parapet wall, valve vault, access roads and reservoir intake structure for the dam, which has reached the end of its lifespan.
General Contractor Allison Park Contractors awarded Nicholson the foundation contract for the project, which includes void grouting beneath the existing spillway, constructing a grout curtain wall through parts of the dam’s centerline and installing anchors in the new spillway.
Bellwood Dam is located approximately 2.5 hours from Nicholson’s headquarters.
“We’re thrilled to be doing work that will positively benefit a local community right in our back yard,” said Dino Kartofilis, Senior Vice President, Nicholson’s Eastern Region. “The work performed on this project will help to ensure that 20,000 residents have a safe and reliable water source in the Altoona area – and we’re proud to be part of that.”
Nicholson’s work at the dam will be completed in 2023.
