Background

Nicholson installed over 1,600 micropiles for the new approaches to the Williamsburg Bridge in New York City. The piles had 13-3/8 inch diameter seismic casings founded in rock and soil and capacities ranging from working loads of 60 to 150 tons. Over 30 full scale load tests were carried out. At the time, this was believed to be the largest micropile contract ever let in the United States. At the peak of construction, Nicholson had seven high-capacity drill rigs in operation.
