Background
Tom Miller Dam is located on the lower Colorado River, approximately six miles Northwest of Austin, Texas. Tom Miller Dam impounds Lake
Austin, the last in a series of reservoirs referred to as the "Highland Lakes" of central Texas.
Nicholson installed 55 post-tensioned 18-strand anchors for the rehabilitation of the dam. The anchors, which featured a design load of 745 kips and a maximum length of 155 feet, were installed in an uncontrolled overflow spillway and the powerhouse intake area. The anchor installation activities in the spillway were supported by a barge-mounted crane. The anchors had Class 1 corrosion protection and were installed in vertical, eight-inch diameter drilled holes.
Nicholson also installed 207 passive anchors, the majority of which were drilled and installed through water at depths ranging from 4-30 feet.
