Background

Nicholson was contracted to provide ground improvement for the construction of a new 75,000-square-foot office building in Taylorsville, UT. To improve the site’s bearing capacity, Nicholson installed 112 stone columns to a maximum depth of 18 feet using dry-bottom-feed methods. With the dry-bottom-feed method, the vibroprobe is inserted into the ground and penetrates to the target depth under its own weight and compressed air jetting.

The stone columns were installed using a Vibro Stitcher, which is a vibroprobe mounted on a conventional excavator. The Stitcher system offers flexibility when working on busy, congested sites and is less expensive to mobilize compared to a crane-mounted vibroprobe.
