Background
In 2008, the Ringgold High School cafeteria underwent a complete renovation which included the installation of a new structural slab, a newly designed kitchen with a food court environment, installation of new VCT flooring, ceiling panels, lighting and door fixtures, and mechanical, electrical and plumbing upgrades.
To support the cafeteria’s new structural slab, Nicholson designed and installed 138 micropiles inside the cafeteria. The piles, which were installed with a Davey Kent DK 515 drill using rotary percussive drilling methods, were 31 feet in length and had a capacity of 45 kips. The piles were installed in congested areas with as little as 14 feet of headroom. Micropiles are an ideal choice for projects with limited access and confined spaces, as well as sensitive adjacent structures.
