Background

Nicholson installed foundation elements for a significant portion of the recently renovated and refurbished Paradisus Resort on Puerto Rico’s northeastern coast.

Nicholson installed 759 stone columns to reduce the consolidation of a subsurface peat layer. The stone columns reached depths of 30 feet. The stone columns were used as drainage elements prior to the placement of a surcharge load that accelerated the consolidation process.

Once the consolidation process was achieved, Nicholson installed 698 augercast piles. The piles were installed as deep foundation elements to transfer the building loads below the peat layer. Of the 698 piles, 593 piles were 16 inches in diameter and 105 piles were 12 inches in diameter. The piles reached depths of 45 feet. The working capacity for the 12-inch-diameter piles is 58 tons and 68 tons for the 16-inch-diameter piles.
