Background

A planned 745,000-sq-ft, 44-story Four Seasons Hotel and Residences will house 256 hotel rooms and 143 condominiums in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. To provide for a foundation below the water table, the design called for a 95,000-sq-ft diaphragm wall for both excavation support and
protection from seawater infiltration. The diaphragm wall contract was completed by a joint venture between Nicholson Construction Company (d.b.a. Soletanche Inc.) and Inquip. The excavation reaches depths of 92 ft.

More than 520 temporary tieback anchors were installed to support the diaphragm wall. Anchors range from 4 strands in the upper rows to as many as 27 strands in the lower rows for a total of approximately 55,000 linear ft. The anchor contract was completed by Nicholson Construction Company. Careful site monitoring during diaphragm wall construction and excavation provided the assurance that the diaphragm wall was stable.
